Flixbus, traveling with your bicycle.

Flixbus is a German company that offers routes between 2500 destinations in 36 countries at low cost including cycle transport, either on a bike rack or as special luggage.

Their website and app are easy to use including an interactive map.

Services include toilet facilities, free Wi-Fi, snacks and drinks, numerous plug sockets, lockers for hand luggage.

Bicycle Transportation on a Bike Carrier.

During cycling season, many  buses are equipped with bike racks. Your bike must be of standard size with all pannier removed and weigh no more than 20 kg. You can add your bicycle during the booking process.

Bicycle Transportation as Special Luggage.

If transport via racks is not available you can book your bicycle on as special luggage, this is done by web chat or calling customer services at the earliest 48 hours before departure.

Special luggage is limited to a total circumference (height in cm + with in cm + depth in cm) of up to 240 cm and a weight of up to 30 kg.

After calling customer service all payments for special luggage are made to the driver.

Not all routes have special luggage service available, always check before making your booking.

I have not used Flixbus, reviews seem mixed but most are positive given that ticket prices are cheaper

compared to train and air travel.

They just opened a line that runs down through San Francisco, and I have ridden it back and forth a few times now. It's been a good alternative to driving for me, and although I haven't taken a bike on it yet, I have taken an electric skateboard and even been able to charge it en route, which is nice. The buses I've been on have been modern and decent, though not quite as comfortable as the long-distance buses I've ridden in other countries. For a couple hour ride, it's a great deal.

It seems that Flixbus is just an intermediary and the actual operators are contractors, so I think that's why peoples' experiences may vary.

Once but never again! Booked a overnight trip from Maastricht to Turin with a transfer in Basel. A few days prior to departure I got informed that from Basel they would use another type of bus. To be sure, I called them and got confirmed that this bus could also transport my bike. The first leg to Basel went fine. During the transfer time (1,5 h) I got an urgent call from Flixbus to inform me that the new bus 'unfortunately' was cancelled. I needed to be in Turin that Sunday evening for the start of a bicycle race so had to buy a € 250,- Swiss train ticket to get there (very late). And was very lucky that at that late stage, there was even room for my bike on the Italian and Swiss trains.
