The Grandes Traversées du Jura Cycle route GTJ is a 360 km long parcour from Montbéliard to Culoz. This Blog guide will cover the section that passes through the Department of the Jura from Foncine le Haut to Mijoux.
The Jura mountains are situated north of the Alps and run along the Swiss border, there is about 1300 meters of climbing on this 88 km adventure rewarded by many superb vistas, including flashes of Mont Blanc.
The Haut Jura's mountain scenery, isolated villages, lakes, and Comte Cheese produced from the brown and white Montbéliard cows awaits.
The route is well signposted and has several well written guide books mostly in French.
After the descent from Lac St Point, just before Fontcine le Haut police station , there is a short climb to the viewpoint Belvédère du Bulay the effort will not disappoint and there are benches to enjoy lunch. If climbing is not your thing, a couple a km further at Les Planches-en-Montagne ( Drinking water is available at fountain ), there is the impressive Cascades & Gorges de la Langouette. It is worth getting off the bike and walking from bridge to bridge.
After these couple of detours the route continues to climb towards the town of Saint Laurent en Grandvaux with shops and a local tourist office. Leaving Grandvaux the forests appear as the route heads towards Lac de l'Abbaye there are many great vistas as the landscape climbs, the route is now in the High Jura Park and approaches the towns of Morez and Morbier home of a famous Jura Cheese.
Looking down on the route heading out of Morez there are names sprayed and painted on road. This is Tour de France country. The TDF has passed through the Haut Jura on many occasions. At Lamoura there is the
Museum of Lapidary
