Review Sawyer Mini Water Filter

Sawyer Mini Water Filter

When we first moved to France 15 years ago, most villages had a fountain or wash house with free access to drinkable water. Slowly with more and more regulation and the cost incurred most of these sources of water have  disappeared. Replaced by  signs "non potable" and "pas de surveillance de l'eau". Or the tap has been turned off.

There have been a few stomach upsets from drinking fountain water so we decided to invest in water treatment of some form.

With so much choice. Purification Tablets, Drinking Straws, Water Bottle with built in Filter, UV Devices. It took a few hours of research to decide the Sawyer Mini suited our needs best.

Why did we chose the Sawyer Mini ?

We could source our water from fountains and rivers in France and Europe. The Sawyer Mini filter is light (57g) and compact and can be used to filter water in-line from a hydration pack, with the bag supplied, attached to a used coke, fanta bottle or direct from water source using the straw.

Our water sources will be mostly clean, but if you do have to access your water from high sediment source there is a syringe supplied so you can purge your Sawyer Mini. (It is recommended to purge after ever adventure)

The last reason was the claim the Sawyer Mini could filter up to 400k litres so for the price of 37 euro it seemed the best value to keep us healthy on our adventures.

How does in work ?

The Sawyer Mini contains a high number of tiny ‘U’ shaped hollow fiber micro-tubes that trap contaminants while allowing decontaminated water to freely pass through at a high flow rate — eliminating the need to store water and reducing the possibility of water contamination after the filtration process.

The Sawyer Mini is certified for 0.1 micron filtration, meaning there is no pore size larger than 0.1 micron in size. This makes it impossible for harmful bacteria (like salmonella or leptospirosis), protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi to pass through the filter.

The website states the Sawyer mini can filter up to 400k litres, the MINI’s filtering membranes are sturdy enough to withstand back washing using the included syringe, restoring up to 98.5% of the filter’s flow rate.
